FLORENCE J. ABBOTT COWAN
LOCKE -- Florence J. Abbott Cowan, 94, formerly of Route 38, Locke, died Monday, July 29, 2002 at the Auburn Nursing Home. Mrs. Cowan was born Dec. 15, 1907 in Homer, a daughter of the late Harry C. and Delia A. Bush Abbott. Mrs. Cowan grew up in Montana and was a graduate of Montana State Normal School. For several years she lived in and taught from one-room school houses in Montana, where she had also served in the position of Superintendent of Schools for Meagher County. After returning to the Locke area, Mrs. Cowan then began teaching in the McLean, Locke and Moravia school districts prior to returning to the Cortland State Teacher's College to further her own education. Upon graduation from Cortland State, Mrs. Cowan then specialized in teaching reading classes with the Groton, Lansing, Romulus and Ovid school districts, as well as the Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga BOCES, until her retirement. Mrs. Cowan was a member of the NYS Retired Teacher's Assoc. and a life member of the National Teacher's Association. She was also a member of the former Locke Grange for over 50 years.
She is survived by several nieces, great nieces and great nephews. Mrs. Cowan was predeceased by her husband, Raymond in 1999, a sister, Ella Abbott and brothers, Carl and John Abbott. | Florence J. Abbott
